Natural Monument: Myonggan Monolith

This rock stands in the middle of a plain in Ripsok-ri, Myonggan County.

It was formed as a result of basalt lava remaining on the vent of a volcanic eruption that occurred between the late tertiary period and the early quaternary period, which had since been subject to erosion by the Myonggan Stream.

With distinct crevices and in the shape of a hexagonal pillar, it is hard and greyish green.

Its height above sea level is 103m and its relative height, 50m.

The circumference is 140m round at the bottom, 21m round at the top and 100m round at the 25m-high point.

The rock is relatively round, facing a cliff to the east and slopes to the north and west.

It is of significance in studying volcanic activities and crustal movements and adds beauty to the surrounding scenery.
